Durch die Lektüre von H. Martin „Wenn es Krieg gibt, gehen wir in die Wüste“ und der Biographie von E. Kosakow „Lockruf der Wüste“, wuchs mein Interesse, die ehemalige Kolonie des Deutschen Reiches näher kennenzulernen. Der Besuch einer Multimediashow „Südliches Afrika“ in undesirable Homburg im Herbst 2002 bestärkte meinen Entschluss, die Examensarbeit über Namibia unter dem Schwerpunkt Tourismus zu schreiben. In der Zeit vom 21.12.02 bis zum 8.01.03 hatte ich die Gelegenheit, Namibia zu besuchen und eigene Erhebungen in shape von Befragungen der Touristen und Einheimischen durchzuführen.

Zu Beginn der Arbeit wird in Kapitel 2 zunächst der Begriff „Tourismus“ näher erläutert und sowohl auf die Entwicklung des Tourismus als auch auf die Entwicklung innerhalb der Tourismusforschung eingegangen. Des Weiteren wird dann der speziell für Namibia zutreffenden Entwicklungstourismus beschrieben. Anschließend werden in Kapitel three die natur- und kulturgeographischen Grundlagen des Tourismus in Namibia analysiert, die die wichtigste Voraussetzung des heute bestehenden Tourismus bilden. Im folgenden Kapitel wird dann der Tourismus in Namibia mit seiner Entwicklung und seiner heutigen Struktur näher beleuchtet. Eigene empirische Untersuchungen in shape von Umfragen und Interviews werden innerhalb der Darstellung des Tourismus miteinbezogen. Um die Problematik des namibischen Tourismus verstehen zu können, um daraus schließlich in Kapitel 6 Lösungsansätze zu gewinnen, bedarf es zunächst einer examine der bestehenden touristischen Nachfrage und Angebote, dargestellt an den meist besuchten Sehenswürdigkeiten Namibias. Dabei wird vor allem der Schwerpunkt auf das touristische Angebot gelegt, das exemplarisch an der Stadt Swakopmund dargestellt wird. Im Anschluss daran werden die Auswirkungen des Tourismus auf das Land und seine Einwohner beschrieben. Im letzten Kapitel werden die Chancen und Risiken des Tourismus anhand der vorher gewonnenen Ergebnisse aufgezeigt und Ideen für einen nachhaltigen Tourismus miteinbezogen, der dazu dienen soll, ökonomische und ökologische Aspekte zu vereinbaren.
